about

Melbourne-based trio Acopia unveils their new single, ‘Disengage’, a post-punk dirge of loss and lamentation. The subtle track shows off the band’s talent for reduced, direct arrangements that steadily smoulder and gather dreamers like moths to a flame.

‘Disengage’ arrives with a brooding bassline underpinning staccato synth bleeps that needle at tender feelings embedded in one’s soul - yearning, regret, disappointment. A vocal shrouded in mist begins to float above wispy pads as atmospherics flutter in-and-out of the edges of listeners’ perception, all carried by the swaying pulse of an 808 rhythm. The track drifts away like the last embers of dusk, vanishing as quickly as it came.

‘Disengage’ is the fourth in a series of singles by Acopia approaching the launch of their eponymous new album, releasing in November 2023. The band has carved out their own particular zone at the crossroads of trip hop, shoegaze and dream pop, harmonising the distinct creative voices of each member - Lachlan McGeehan, Morgan Wright, and Kate Durman - into a whole even greater than the sum of its parts. ‘Acopia’ is the follow-up to 2022’s stellar ‘Chances’, and will continue to build on their world of romanticism and restraint.
